Sometimes you’ve just gotta Go For It!

Way back in December 2010 we were watching a video where Ed Dale of The Challenge fame was talking about how powerful Facebook was going to be for businesses in 2011 .

We had signed up to Facebook back in 2008, but to be honest hadn’t really done very much with it probably because we weren’t sure what to do. We weren’t that enamoured either… can’t remember why 🙂

However, as Ed is known to be someone who is adept at spotting business trends we thought we ought to check it out. We’re very glad that we did because not only have we been able to use Facebook to effectively generate business we’ve made some great ‘virtual’ friends on there as well. More on that later in the year when we go and visit some of them!

So in August last year when we heard Ed talking about the power of having an online magazine on Apple’s Newsstand, we decided to investigate further.

After some deliberation, we thought why not? Whilst neither of us owned an ipad nor an iphone at the time (currently the platforms where the magazine is available) we didn’t let this deter us, and it sounded fairly straightforward-ish…more on this later.

We girded our loins, got stuck into the training and produced our first issue at the beginning of November.

Actually, the majority of the hard work was done by Davina because as she was the one with a Mac computer, she was leading the project. Oh and she’d bought a mini ipad by this time 🙂

Our Vision for the Magazine

Our vision is to create a magazine that is an indispensable guide for people who want to make their own marketing graphics and visuals.

Opportunities will exist for readers to ask questions, make comments, get help and support and also contribute to the magazine. We would like to develop a community of like-minded readers who can interact with us and other readers if they so wish

It’s written in jargon-free English, and packed full of great instruction using easy to follow tutorials, featured software and techniques, useful websites and time-saving resources. It also has a thread of humour running through it and for those of you who know us, this should come as no surprise! You’ve gotta have fun.

We want people to look forward to each new issue!

Who is the Magazine for?

  • The small business owner who wants to be able to create their own graphics because they enjoy the creative aspect and want to stay in control of the process so they don’t have to wait for a third party to action something.
  • The hobbyist who needs marketing graphics to promote their hobby – this could be needing to create a Flyer for a local event, knock up a design for an invitation or just play with the fantastic functionality that many software programmes have.
  • People who are responsible for creating visual content on behalf of customers as part of an overall content strategy , for example Social Media Managers or Virtual Assistants.
  • Members of non-profit organisations who, on a limited budget have been given the task of creating brochures, pamphlets and even websites, all of which require graphics and visuals.

We are known for helping people save time and frustration in the learning process by making our instructions (video, audio or in PDF form) easy to understand, cutting through the technical fog and removing some of the mystique that can be associated with creating one’s own visuals.

We are also practitioners – we use these tools every day and learn something new every day too and we like to pass this on!

Congrats ladies on this fantastic accomplishment, so very happy for you! I have an iPad, but I’m not using it a lot, LOL! I know you gonna have awesome success because your tutorials and steps are always so clear and easy to follow! We need things to be simple, and your creations really help with that 🙂

    • Hi Delia – I wonder why you’re not using your ipad??

  • What an accomplishment Caroline & Davina! How long does it take you to create one magazine, from cover to cover? And to be honest, I had no idea there was an Apple Newstand for virtual magazines. I guess I need to look into that. 🙂

    • Hi Keri – great question! This is our second issue and it’s taken about 4 weeks to complete cover to cover. However, much of this was finalising the layout/tweaking that we did in Issue #1 and so the template is now set up. We aim to get this down to 1 week, however we also aim to publish each month but make it shorter.

It is, as they say, a work in progress 🙂 If you try it out and subscribe, we’d love to have your thoughts on it.

  • Margaret Heisworkingitout Reed

Well! Congrats to you ladies!! When it hits Android I will hope to check it out!!

    • Margaret – we’ll tip you the nod. It’s interesting just seeing which devices people are using…

  • Lisa Mallis

Awesome, awesome, awesome! Congrats on creating your magazine! I can’t wait until it’s available on Kindle!

    • Hi Lisa – We’re not exactly sure when that will be but we’ll tip you the nod.

  • Robin Strohmaier

Congratulations, Caroline and Davina, on the launch of DIY Marketing Graphics Magazine! How exciting! I do have an iPad, but have not read any magazines on it yet. Your video tutorials are fantastic and I’m looking forward to checking out your magazine. Again, congratulations!

    • Robin thanks for your good wishes – Caroline & Davina

That’s really something great you both have done Davina and Caroline! My graphics and/or image creation skills are completely based on the online video tutorials created by experts like you and others. I’m not an expert in this, but whatever I’ve learned, I’ve learned from these video tutorials.

I’ve watched a lot of your video tutorials on your Youtube channel and I really want to THANK both of you (Davina & Caroline) for creating such great and easy to understand tutorials for us! 🙂

I wish you both great success with your new “DIY Marketing Graphics Magazine” and I’d definitely go for it! God Bless and wish you both a wonderful weekend! 🙂

    • Hi Alex – thank you very much and it is excellent to get feedback and know how we are helping people!

  • Marilyn Arriaga

Pretty interesting. I haven’t read too many on my iphone yet. I like the idea of DIY graphics, I am always needing more graphics since much of what i do is more tangible and visual.

    • Hi Marilyn – what exactly is it that you do? Visuals are so big and forecast to be an even bigger part of 2014.

  • Sheila Hawkins

This is great news for someone like me. It would be nice to add to what I know (enough to be dangerous) so that I can create some of my images myself. I’m not an iPad or iPhone user, so I’ll be on the lookout for the Kindle version.

    • We like dangerous people – adds to the excitement! 😉
We’ll keep you posted. Should be a bit later on in the year.

      • Sheila Hawkins

🙂 Never thought about it as exciting. Thanks for the new perspective, Caroline!
